Fans of dive bars probably remember Bailey’s on the Southside in Birmingham. Located above Dave’s Pub on 20th St, a night out at Bailey’s always guaranteed that you were waking up with a healthy amount of cigarette smoke on your clothes. And probably a pretty substantial hangover.
The bar is getting a facelift and should be open sometime in early 2010. Look for a new name and some changes: the stage is refurbished, bar has been redone, kitchen has been completely renovated. The owners are talking about selecting a wine list and a simple menu to start.
The bar is actually a historic location, the tiled area of the main room served as a club/card room in the 20′s. The crest depicted in the tile was the original crest of Birmingham (which serves the same purpose as Langford’s Top Hat logo: http://ow.ly/JDNM).
The stage and music room is a focus of the bar. Local and national acts are being considered for the 2010 lineup. The renovations are a good sign for a somewhat revitalized 5 Points area, which has seen the 5Points Music Hall, Courtyard Southside, and Club Crush open recently, among others.
More info on the opening coming soon. JB
